The VLC media player is an open-source program has become one go-to platform for the digital content consumption from all around the world. The program’s most amazing feature is the ability to play videos of any format that a user can ever imagine. One major exception and expectation are 360 videos and images, and yes, they are being played without any restriction or so.
Last week, VLC unveiled that they are now enabling their feature of 360 videos and photos that will be viewed on VLC player very easily! The nonprofit organization Video LAN recently released an experimental new technical preview which they named as VLC 360 and is available for downloading and that too for free of cost! VLC 360 was made by a partnership between VideoLan and the famous hardware company named Giroptic, who is the creator of “360Cam,” a still image and a video camera.
Well lets talk about the working of the VLC 360 that is using Google’s specs for their spatial media. It includes functions like:
Playback of the immersive Videos that are following the Spatial Video specifications.
Playback of the immersive Photos and Panoramas following the Spherical specifications, and what not! It provides different styles of Display modes that includes Zoom, Reverse, etc. You can easily control with your Mouse and Keyboard.
There is a bit of sad news that VLC will not be able to get integrated with many of the YouTube’s 360 degree videos. Video LAN President named, Jean-Baptiste Kempf told the sources that ‘any support of this type of videos is totally dependent upon Google. 360 images and videos is not the extent of VLC’s immersive plans. The Future releases of the VLC with 360 degree features will be made available for Android as well as iOS and Xbox One. There will be mobile versions that will use the phone sensors so as to navigate inside the videos gallery. VLC will most probably be supporting Virtual Reality headsets like HTC VIVE, Daydream, Oculus or OSVR, in 2017.
